ARPA-E invites America’s established innovators to consider the ARPA-E Senior Fellows Program. Sr. Fellows are typically distinguished researchers or entrepreneurs in energy-related and innovation-related fields, and may come from industrial, academic, governmental, non-governmental, or other backgrounds. ARPA-E is looking for smart and motivated scientists and engineers who want to help tackle some of the most pressing and exciting challenges of our time.
Within ARPA-E, the Fellows form an internal think tank focused on identifying and developing new energy paradigms and strengthening existing program areas. Sr. Fellows arrive at ARPA-E with a vision of what they intend to accomplish, and actively pursue this vision during their fellowship. They may also engage in current program and organizational support. During their tenure, Sr. Fellows undergo a full-immersion experience in energy technology development, working with entrepreneurs and experts throughout academia, industry, and the national labs to impact the future of energy both in the United States and throughout the world.
Primary job responsibility: Independent energy technology development
- Synthesizing data from multiple sources to identify high-impact energy technology opportunities.
- Reviewing literature.
- Brainstorming with experts.
- Attending and presenting at conferences.
- Performing technical and financial analyses.
- Evaluating market and business opportunities and obstacles.
- Generating both original research papers and area reviews for publication.
Discretionary job responsibilities: Current program and organizational support
- Supporting existing programs through technical and financial analysis.
- Developing promising future program areas.
- Developing and executing workshops.
- Reviewing proposals.
- Visiting ARPA-E funded projects to provide on-site support.
ARPA-E has no laboratory facilities; Sr. Fellows may not perform laboratory research on-site.
Required qualifications:
- Ph.D. in science or engineering with more than five years of distinguished experience in an energy-related or innovation-related field.
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Passion for energy technology research and development.
- Interest in working in a multi-disciplinary, fast-paced environment, focused on energy technology research and development.
- Strong analytical and research skills and a demonstrated capacity for creative thinking.
- A distinguished record of scholarship and publication.
Employment details:
- Initial term of hire will not exceed two years.
- Duty station is ARPA-E headquarters, in Washington, DC.
- Candidates are hired throughout the year on a rolling admission cycle.
- Sr. Fellows receive an independent budget for professional development, travel, and project support.
- Sr. Fellows can server either as full-time federal employees, paid a competitive salary based on experience and receiving full benefits, or via the Intergovernmental Personnel Act while on leave of absence from another government agency, university, or non-profit organization.
