The ARPA-E Fellows Program: A Look Back with Former Fellow Dr. Mike Campos

From 2017 to 2019, Dr. Michael Campos was an ARPA-E Fellow, focused on geothermal energy, advanced materials, and addressing the second “valley of death” in technology commercialization. Dr. Campos received his PhD in Chemistry from Columbia University, where he studied the synthesis and surface chemistry of colloidal quantum dots for applications including lighting, displays, and photovoltaics.

Today, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) announced up to $20 million in funding to accelerate the incorporation of machine learning and artificial intelligence into energy technology and product design processes.

The U.S. Department of Energy has announced $36 million in awards for 18 projects as part of the High Intensity Thermal Exchange through Materials and Manufacturing Processes (HITEMMP) program, as well as the final OPEN+ Cohort, High Temperature Devices. These project teams seek to develop new approaches and technologies for the design and manufacture of high temperature, high pressure, and highly compact heat exchangers and components.
