ARPA-E ANNOUNCES NEW FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOR SF6-FREE ROUTES FOR ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
This topic focuses on the development of technologies to support the reduction of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) emissions from the electric transmission and distribution sector. Targeted outcomes include analyzing the viability and risks associated with alternative gas solutions on the market today, identifying potential new alternative gases or gas mixtures with comparable performance to SF6 but with a much lower global warming potential (GWP) accelerating development and testing of vacuum-dry air or vacuum-solid dielectric technologies for high voltage (at or above 245 kV) applications, designing cost-effective sensors that enable early and continuous SF6 and alternative gas leak detection, and/or creating new pathways for the permanent fixation or destruction of SF6 for end-of-life disposal.
ARPA-E ANNOUNCES $40 MILLION TO REDUCE FUEL WASTE FROM NUCLEAR REACTORS
ARPA-E’s new “Optimizing Nuclear Waste and Advanced Reactor Disposal Systems” (ONWARDS) program addresses challenges posed by the limited disposal options for spent nuclear fuel through the development of novel processes and applications at the start of a fuel cycle that prevents the formation of nuclear waste.
ARPA-E ANNOUNCES $35 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR ECOSYNBIO PROJECTS
15 new research projects will seek improvements to biofuel manufacturing that maximize production while reducing CO2 emissions waste. The ECOSynBio program promotes the use of advanced synthetic biology tools to engineer novel biomass conversion platforms and systems.
