After the recent excitement around Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's announcement of a major physics breakthrough in fusion, Commonwealth Fusion Systems and their partners at MIT announced a fusion engineering achievement of equally incredible significance.
REPAIR, like many ARPA-E programs, pulls in diverse teams whose expertise often comes from outside the target industry. REPAIR teams are leveraging advances in chemistry, material science, robotics, and mapping— which originally were developed for the defense, aerospace, and automotive industries, among others. To ensure we “translate” these advances to the needs of the gas utilities, ARPA-E established the Testing and Technical Specifications Panel (TTSP) to advise the REPAIR program.

ARPA-E launched a supplement to our existing REFUEL program, which focused on carbon neutral liquid fuel development. The new "REFUEL+IT" program focuses on the Integration and Testing (IT) of the type of technologies developed within the original REFUEL program.
Many ARPA-E programs are dedicated to managing and utilizing heat in an effective way, including our HEATS, HITEMMP, and most recently our ULTIMATE programs. The projects in these programs work to use the heat generated in energy processes in different ways, so that businesses and consumers can lower costs, improve efficiency, and decrease their carbon footprints.
