ARPA-E Program Director Michael Haney

Dr. Michael Haney currently serves as a Program Director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). His focus at ARPA-E includes the application of integrated optics and photonics technologies for energy-efficient computing, switching, signal processing, and power conversion.

Haney is on assignment from the University of Delaware where he is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. From 2006 to 2010, Haney served as a Program Manager within the Microsystems Technology Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). At DARPA, he developed and managed a portfolio of R&D programs that expanded the application domain of integrated photonics and micro-optics in computer interconnects and switching, bio-sensing, remote sensing, and solar cells. He has held a previous academic position at George Mason University, and research and development leadership positions at BDM Federal and General Dynamics Corp. In 1998, Haney co-founded Applied Photonics, Inc. to advance integrated optical interconnect technology for military and commercial applications.

Haney received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana, and B.S. in Physics from University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America.
