Dr. Ryan Umstattd

Dr. Ryan Umstattd currently serves as the Acting Deputy Director for Commercialization at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) where he is responsible for oversight of all Technology-to-Market activities. 

Ryan previously served as an ARPA-E Senior Commercialization Advisor where he helped prepare breakthrough energy technologies for transition from the lab to customers within the Department of Defense (DoD). 

Prior to joining ARPA-E, Ryan served in the Air Force as a scientist, professor, R&D program manager, and technology acquisition officer where he gained firsthand knowledge of many facets of delivering new technologies including performing groundbreaking electron emission research for high power microwave devices, garnering financial support,  leading successful research teams, creating and managing a plasma physics fundamental research investment portfolio, negotiating and awarding a $460M contract for development of a satellite ground system, and leading a team of 120 personnel in the operational certification and smooth transition of a first-of-its-kind $3B missile warning satellite into the hands of the end user.

Dr. Umstattd earned a PhD in Applied Science (Plasma Physics) at the University of California, Davis. He holds a B.S. in Physics from Santa Clara University.
