Dr. Madhav Acharya

Dr. Madhav Acharya currently serves as a Technology-to-Market Advisor at the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E). Acharya’s focus at ARPA-E includes conversion of renewable energy into carbon neutral liquid fuels through catalytic and electrochemical pathways.

After graduate work in the field of nanoporous carbon membranes for gas separation at the University of Delaware, Acharya began his career at ExxonMobil in 1998 and progressed through a number of technical and managerial roles of increasing responsibility. His initial work was in the area of zeolite catalysis, where he worked on development, scale-up and licensing of catalysts for low sulfur fuels and advanced lubricants.

After a stint as Operations Supervisor at a catalyst manufacturing plant, Acharya worked as Process Engineering Section Head leading a group of technical experts supporting ExxonMobil’s global refining footprint. This included an overseas assignment in the UK. He then managed the ExxonMobil-UOP Alliance for joint technology licensing.

Directly prior to joining ARPA-E, Acharya was Manager of Research Guidance and Valuation. In this role, he guided new R&D assessments in ExxonMobil’s downstream portfolio, including techno-economic analysis, funding decisions and long term portfolio management.

Acharya is currently pursuing a Masters in Sustainability Management at American University.
