Critical Need: 
Reliable power system operation with 100% renewable generation has yet to be implemented. The main reason for this is that today's power systems require approximately 25% of the load to be supplied by synchronous generators at any time, e.g., gas turbines, steam turbines, or diesel generators. Today, the inverter-based renewable peak generation from wind and photovoltaic is limited to approximately 75% of the instantaneous load in large islands such as Hawaii and Puerto Rico. If the renewable peak generation exceeds this limit, there is a high risk of blackouts primarily because of insufficient power oscillations damping between generators after a contingency.
Project Innovation + Advantages: 
Siemens will develop an operator support system and grid planning functionality that enable a power system to operate with 100% inverter-based renewable generation from wind and solar. ReNew100 features automatic Controller Parameter Optimization and model calibration technologies that help ensure power system reliability as the generation mix changes. Successful test results will be a milestone toward the goal of a stable and reliable power system obtaining a majority of total electrical energy sourced from variable wind and solar.
Potential Impact: 
ReNew100 will pave the way towards 100% inverter-based renewable peak generation from wind and solar in large island systems such as Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
Security: 
The project expects to achieve a grid reliability level of 98% for mixed generation and 95% for fully renewable generation.
Environment: 
Electricity generation accounts for over 40% of U.S. carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Enabling large-scale contributions of wind and solar power for our electricity generation would result in a substantial decrease in CO2 emissions.
Economy: 
The current 75% renewable peak generation limit for wind and solar corresponds to a Wind and Solar Capacity Factor (WSCF) of about 30%. ReNew100 will demonstrate how to increase this peak generation limit from 75% to 100%, which will enable the WSCF to increase to 40% or even more. An island like Hawaii could conservatively save $20 million per year with just a 10% increase in WSCF.
