Dr. Joseph King
Dr. Joseph King currently serves as a Program Director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E). His focus at ARPA-E includes oil and gas efficiencies, thermoelectric conversion, advanced cements and concretes, and next generation grid technology.
King has extensive experience in developing and leading high-performance teams as well as identifying promising new venture opportunities. Prior to joining ARPA-E, King served at DuPont for 13 years in various capacities. His most recent role was as the corporate Ventures Managing Director for Advanced Materials. In this role, he managed the investment portfolio for the advanced materials business units and was responsible for finding and negotiating access to new technologies to ensure portfolio growth. At DuPont, King also served as Global Technical Manager, directing technical teams from around the world and screening new external technologies for growth potential and business fit. King also coordinated all global technical products research and development efforts and administration functions in his first role at DuPont.
Prior to his work at DuPont, King worked for GE Financial Assurance, which was ultimately spun out of GE as Genworth Financial. He first served as Risk Management Quality Leader and later as Vice President of Marketing & Product Management. As VP, he designed and implemented global strategic planning processes and designed methods to track and manage new product pipelines for insurance and financial products. In his final role at GE Financial Assurance as Vice President of Capital Markets, King developed a pipeline for capital market deals and headed project ideation and screening sessions within each business. Before joining GE Financial Assurance, King began his career as a Staff Scientist and Principal Research Lead at GE Corporate Research & Development.
King earned both his Ph.D. in Physical Organic Chemistry and his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. He completed his post-doctoral study at the Max-Planck Institut für Kohlenforschung.
