Dr. William Horak

Program Director

Dr. William Horak currently serves as a Program Director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). His focus at ARPA-E includes advanced thermal systems, nuclear energy, and combined heat and power.  

Prior to joining ARPA-E, he worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory for more than 20 years. At Brookhaven National Laboratory he served as Chair of the Energy Science and Technology Department and as Chair of the Nuclear Science and Technology Department. In these positions, Dr. Horak had a lead role in the Department of Energy's activities in response to the Chernobyl accident, including evaluations of Soviet-designed facilities. He has also implemented and managed numerous programs in nuclear safety, international safeguards, and energy-system development.

Dr. Horak has a B.S. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Illinois, and a M.A. from the Fletcher School at Tufts University.
