Advanced Thermo/Electrochemical Metals Extraction (A-TEME) Workshop

ARPA-E hosted a workshop entitled “Advanced Thermo/Electrochemical Metals Extraction (A-TEME)” on Thursday, January 31, 2013 in Arlington, VA.

This workshop convened the world’s leading experts in metals extraction and thermal engineering and identified innovative research paths forward for the development of disruptive technologies that can significantly reduce the energy consumption needed to extract light metals (aluminum, titanium, and magnesium) from ore while simultaneously enabling high grade heat recovery for power generation. Participants lent their expertise to help set energy efficiency and cost targets that will define a successful research program. 

The outcomes from the A-TEME workshop will assist ARPA-E leadership in the development of potential programs that target key technological roadblocks relevant to the ARPA-E mission. The anticipated outcomes of the workshop are:

  • Identification of most promising innovative technological paths for significant energy efficiency gains in production of aluminum, titanium, and magnesium;
  • Identification of innovative emission reduction strategies in metals production;
  • Identification of innovative heat recovery technologies that can result in power production;
  • Identification of research opportunities to enable efficient and high grade light metal recycling;
  • Prioritization of new game-changing technology concepts based on renewable energy, energy efficiency and cost reduction potential;
  • Development of a cooperative and collaborative environment for team building between metallurgy, electrochemical, and thermal engineering communities.
