Heating, Direct Air Capture, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HDVAC) Workshop

February 28 - March 1, 2023

W Atlanta Downtown, Atlanta, GA

ARPA-E is interested in technologies that leverage the potential synergies between building HVAC systems and Direct Air Capture (DAC). Re-engineering commercial building and industrial facility HVAC systems with both DAC and advanced cooling techniques could drive additional operational emission reductions beyond current state-of-the-art and emerging technologies. These systems could offer further benefit in lowering the energy requirements for DAC systems. The workshop included discussion of the commercialization challenges of such systems including transportation logistics, business models, and carbon utilization/storage options.

The goals of the workshop were to identify technical metrics required for synergistic deployment of HVAC and DAC, prioritize R&D needs, and estimate impact of R&D projects if successful. Participants had the opportunity to provide feedback on or suggest alternatives to the proposed topic areas and current performance metrics that ARPA-E is considering including in a potential Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA).
