High Efficiency Hybrid Vehicles

ARPA-E held a workshop on "High Efficiency Hybrid Vehicles" on October 12-13, 2017 in the Southfield, Michigan area. 

The workshop convened leading experts in hybrid electric vehicles, fuels, fuel cells, and combustion engines.  These subject matter experts identified innovative research necessary for the development of disruptive technologies that can significantly enhance the efficiency of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) relative to a conventional vehicle or today’s HEVs. Participants lent their expertise in exploring possible technology research pathways, and to help set energy efficiency, performance and cost targets that can define a successful research program. 

ARPA-E is interested in cost-competitive, highly energy-efficient technologies that will augment battery-powered hybrid electric vehicle range with the additional on-board energy source being a liquid fuel.  Areas of interest include:

The development of high efficiency advanced fuel cells or next-generation internal combustion engines.
The targeted vehicle powertrain architectures include series, parallel or combination hybrids.
Fuels to be used are liquids that are currently (or will be) in mass adoption and cost competitive with gasoline.

Targeted research outcomes include:

The preferred vehicle application and the relevant design space including the level of hybridization, the battery size to range extender capability ratio, the size and power density of the range extender/APU
The definition of the relevant technical targets for the fuel cell stack and advanced combustion engine performance, emissions and energy efficiency characteristics.
