ARPA-E awardee Skyscrape recently teamed up with Ralph Lauren to incorporate ‘Intelligent Insulation’ into Team USA’s Opening Ceremony Parade Uniform for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. The uniform includes a parka made with Skyscrape’s temperature-responsive insulating fabric, as well as a mid-layer jacket, pant, gloves, and boots.

The Energy Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) today announced $31 million in funding for 14 projects as part of ARPA-E’s newest program: Single-Pane Highly Insulating Efficient Lucid Design (SHIELD). SHIELD project teams are developing innovative window coatings and windowpanes that could significantly improve the energy efficiency of existing single-pane windows in commercial and residential buildings.

Workshop
This workshop addressed the technological, cost, and market barriers that impede efficiency improvements to single-pane windows. It brought together experts on windows and building envelopes, manufacturers of current low-cost technologies for improving single-pane windows, researchers working on advanced materials for window retrofits, and a representative group of the building owners and operators who make window retrofit decisions.

ARPA-E’s Single-pane Highly Insulating Efficient Lucid Designs (SHIELD) program seeks to reduce heat-loss for improved building efficiency by developing innovative materials that are both transparent and insulating to retrofit existing single-pane window.
