Why I’m Bringing America’s Energy Innovators Together in Texas

In the heart of Texas, state-of-the-art technology fueled by unprecedented investments are accelerating a new age of American innovation. While the Lone Star State has long been known for its oil and gas, it’s now emerging as a leader in the transition to renewable energy, contributing to more than a fourth of America’s wind-powered electricity generation. The state’s residential and commercial-use solar is scaling faster than anywhere else in the country. And in 2024, Texas will lead the way in adding battery storage to the grid.Today, companies are flocking to Texas with cutting-edge energy…

Life at ARPA-E: Experiences of an ARPA-E Technology-to-Market Advisor

Dr. Rakesh Radhakrishnan has served as Technology-to-Market (T2M) Advisor at ARPA-E since early 2019 and will be completing his tenure in May 2024. During his tenure, he has worked on several key programs and T2M operational initiatives that support the agency’s mission. What attracted you to the role of an ARPA-E Technology to Market Advisor?I began my career at United Technologies Research Center in the early 2000s, shortly after receiving my PhD from Virginia Tech. Early on in my industrial career, I worked on a variety of “high risk, high reward” technology development projects, including…

Zap Energy Achieves Significant Fusion Energy Milestone: Electron Temperature Exceeding 10 Million Degrees

Zap Energy and their collaborators at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, University of California, San Diego, and University of Washington published a peer-reviewed article in Physical Review Letters this month demonstrating electron temperature greater than 10 million degrees (approximately 1 keV, the unit of temperature favored by fusion scientists) in a sheared-flow-stabilized Z pinch. Electron temperatures up to 3 keV were reported. This result is a major physics milestone for Zap Energy and for the broader fusion energy research community.…

ARPA-E PD Q&A Blog Jungho Kim
Meet the Program Director: Dr. Jungho Kim

Tell us about your background and what brought you to ARPA-E. I joined ARPA-E from the University of Maryland where I have taught in the Department of Mechanical Engineering since 1998. I have always been interested in ARPA-E because my primary field of research is in the thermosciences (heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics.) Given ARPA-E’s visibility and funding ability, what better place is there to serve and have a chance to have an outsized impact on our energy use and infrastructure? What are your initial impressions of working at ARPA-E?ARPA-E is an organization full…
