The U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) today announced up to $30 million in funding for a new program focused on improving the energy efficiency of commercial and residential buildings. ARPA-E’s Single-pane Highly Insulating Efficient Lucid Designs (SHIELD) program seeks to reduce heat-loss for improved building efficiency by developing innovative materials that are both transparent and insulating to retrofit existing single-pane window.
Today in Las Vegas, President Obama and Energy Secretary Moniz announced at the Clean Energy Summit $24 million in innovation funding for 11 new solar technologies, as part of ARPA-E’s newest program, MOSAIC.

ARPA-E has announced another Financial Assistance Funding Opportunity for eligible Small Businesses Concerns under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program. This SBIR/STTR Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is a companion program to GENerators for Small Electrical and Thermal Systems (GENSETS) program (12 new GENSETS projects were announced last month), which is aimed at developing generator technologies that will enable more affordable and efficient residential Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems.
The Energy Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) today announced $55 million in funding for 18 innovative projects as part of ARPA-E’s two newest programs: GENerators for Small Electrical and Thermal Systems (GENSETS) and Transportation Energy Resources from Renewable Agriculture (TERRA).
ARPA-E recently announced it is making funding available for a new program. The Generating Realistic Information for Development of Distribution And Transmission Algorithms (GRID DATA) program seeks to fund the development of large-scale, realistic, validated, and open-access electric power system network models (transmission and distribution) that have the detail required for the successful development and testing of transformational power system optimization and control algorithms. The program will also fund the creation of an open-access, self-sustaining repository for the storage, annotation, and curation of these power system models, as well as others generated by the community.
The Energy Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) today announced $60 million in funding for 23 groundbreaking new projects aimed at creating highly efficient and scalable dry-cooling technologies for thermoelectric power plants and developing prototype technologies to explore new pathways for fusion power.
At least 30 ARPA-E project teams have formed new companies to advance their technologies and more than 37 ARPA-E projects have partnered with other government agencies for further development. Additionally, 34 ARPA-E projects have attracted more than $850 million in private-sector follow-on funding after ARPA-E’s investment of approximately $135 million and several technologies have already been incorporated into products that are being sold in the market.
