Challenge

AutoGrid aims to help utilities and energy-as-a-service (EaaS) providers to manage distributed energy resources (DERs) and fully reap the potential economic and energy benefits of these assets in support of decarbonization of the electric grid.

Technical Approach

AutoGrid’s Flex™ platform leverages technology that combines powerful data science, advanced machine-learning, and high-performance network optimization algorithms to precisely predict and optimize supply and demand patterns across large networks of connected DERs in real time. The technology is now used to deliver site- or asset-specific and portfolio value streams. Site- or asset-specific value streams include demand charge management (DCM), time-of-use (TOU) arbitrage, and maximizing use of renewable generation for owners of these DERs. Portfolio value streams from aggregating energy flexibility across these DERs include grid services (peak load shifting, frequency regulation, and non-wires alternatives) and market value streams (capacity markets and ancillary services).

Team

AutoGrid is headquartered in Redwood City, California and is the industry’s leading energy flexibility management and virtual power plant (VPP) platform that enables utilities and EaaS providers to aggregate and optimize DERs. AutoGrid Flex™ allows customers to monetize value streams such as time of use arbitrage, demand charge management, and grid services. The core technology for Flex™ was developed with support from ARPA-E under the GENI program from 2012-2014. AutoGrid has a talented team of engineers, data scientists and industry professionals supporting their SCALEUP project, many of whom were key contributors in AutoGrid’s project for the GENI program.

ARPA-E Mission Alignment

Flex™ is a fully functional, stand-alone energy flexibility management software solution that has been released and deployed to more than 40 customers worldwide (providing 5GW of flexible capacity). At the conclusion of SCALEUP, AutoGrid will release the latest version of the product with two major upgrades and aims to deploy these upgrades in real-life demonstrations and customer engagements. Those upgrades will include enabling the efficient real-time co-optimization of 100,000 distributed energy storage assets with its Flex™ platform (relative to the current Flex™ benchmark of 5,000 assets) and expanding Flex™ beyond current use cases (demand response, renewables and storage) to include the electric vehicle (EV) fleet management use case. These upgrades will help energy companies fully monetize their DERs and ultimately accelerate the transition to cleaner energy sources with reduced emissions by unlocking 387 GW of flexible capacity in the United States by 2025.
