A New Nitrogen Cycle for Bioenergy Crop Production Workshop
November 14-15, 2023
In this workshop, ARPA-E assessed potential technologies that may reduce nitrogen inputs and soil-based greenhouse gas emissions of N2O from the cultivation of bioenergy crops (corn, soybean, and sorghum). The goals for this workshop included the evaluation of technologies capable of: 1) providing high-efficacy alternatives to synthetic fertilizer utilization in agricultural production by advancing microbial fertilization approaches, enhancements of plant nitrogen (N) use efficiency related traits, and developing enabling tools for autogenic N2 fixation, and 2) reducing soil-based N2O emissions in growing these crops through altering the microbial N-cycle either through microbial and/or plant approaches.
