The 2022 ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit was packed full of interesting and insightful discussion from speakers across industry, academia, and government. Photos from the Summit are now available on the Summit website and videos from the Summit are included below to help you relive all the excitement in Denver.

Monday, May 23rd

We kicked off the Summit with keynote addresses from Dr. Jennifer Gerbi, Acting Director and Deputy Director for Technology at ARPA-E, and the Honorable Michael B. Hancock, Mayor of Denver.

Following these keynote addresses was Dr. David Horsup, the Managing Director Technology at OGCI Climate Investments, who gave an inspiring talk on innovations necessary to mitigate emissions in impactful sectors to fight climate change. Dr. Danielle Merfeld, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at GE Renewable Energy, was next on the agenda with a talk on the key challenges of the energy transition and the necessity to decarbonize the energy sector through zero carbon electricity.

For anyone inspired by those keynotes to jump start their own project, an engaging panel on Department of Energy funding innovation came next. This panel covered how DOE funds technology from lab to market in great detail and offered insight into how you can get involved in the process.

There were also two sets of fast pitches on our first day on innovative technologies in transportation and the different phases of power generation and distribution. Our breakout panels on Monday included conversations about cultivating carbon, energy system models, strategies to achieve major emissions reductions, and building a team to “make it matter."

Tuesday, May 24th

Our Tuesday programming featured two breakout panels on nuclear energy and energy opportunities in defense, as well as fast pitch presentations on decarbonizing the economy and reaching zero carbon emissions.

We then had general audience addresses from the Senators from Colorado, the Honorable John Hickenlooper and the Honorable Michael Bennet.

Later, we held a stimulating fireside chat with Doreen Harris, President and Chief Executive Officer of NYSERDA, and Andrew Lund, Chief Engineer of Zero Emission Vehicles at Toyota Motor North America, on the future of hydrogen as a fuel, followed by another fireside with Katherine Hamilton, Chair at 38 North Solutions, and Michael Terrell, Senior Director for Climate at Google, centered around net-zero energy goals.

We followed with a conversation with Saloni Multani, Co-Head, Innovation & Expansion Strategy at Galvanize Climate Solutions, and Shayle Kann, Partner at Energy Impact Partners, discussing investing in climate technology.

Our last discussion was between the Honorable Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and Dr. Suresh Sunderrajan, Associate Laboratory Director for Argonne National Laboratory, on intellectual property in the growing space of energy innovation.

The last set of programming included a fast pitch presentation on natural resources, as well as discussions on the climatech gold rush, mining for energy transformation, and the role of ARPA-E as a catalyst for a change.

Wednesday, May 25th

The last day of programming included a breakout panel on government funding innovation moderated by ARPA-E Deputy Director for Operations Shane Kosinski, as well as additional panels on opportunities and challenges in decarbonization of industry, and rethinking solutions for the resilience, reliability, and security of electric grid infrastructure.

We followed the morning breakout sessions with inspiring keynote addresses from the Honorable Jason Crow, U.S. House of Representatives, another one from Geisha Jimenez Williams, Principal at the American Energy Innovation Council, and a video address from the Honorable Pete Buttigieg, U.S. Secretary of Transportation.
