Lithium Metal Solid-state Cell Production Scale-up and Demonstration

Image

Solid Power is an industry-leading developer of next-generation all solid-state batteries for electric vehicle and mobility applications. With considerably higher energy and greatly improved safety, Solid Power's all solid-state batteries (ASSBs) are revolutionizing future mobile power markets. Solid Power is developing a safer, cheaper and more energy-dense battery (with 50-100% improved energy density compared to today's lithium-ion) by replacing the liquid electrolyte with Solid Power's sulfide-based, solid ion-conducting chemistry while swapping the graphite anode traditionally found in lithium-ion with a lithium metal anode. Established in 2012, Solid Power’s world-class team of battery researchers and engineers are engaged in both new material development and manufacturing scale-up in the company's Colorado-based facility. Solid Power’s team and facility are pushing the boundaries of all solid-state battery (ASSB) performance and manufacturing scale. Solid Power is currently producing 2Ah cells with 320 Wh/kg energy density. Solid Power works exclusively with ASSB materials that provide the best blend of performance and manufacturability. Solid Power’s state-of-the-art research facility, combined with the company’s MWh-scale roll-to-roll pilot manufacturing line, enables new material development and rapid transition to scale  – cells produced by Solid Power can realize up to 500 Wh/kg in cell capacities of up to 100 Ah at full-scale in its current facility. Solid Power’s team is heavily focused on meeting customers’ and partners’ performance, manufacturing, and economic requirements thereby accelerating widespread e-mobility.

Solid Power, the leader in sulfide-based all solid-state batteries (ASSB), in partnership with BMW North America and with key support from Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), proposes the development and demonstration of a high-throughput, roll-to-roll (R2R) production process culminating in extensive performance testing (electrochemical and abuse) and vehicle integration of full-scale ASSB cells. The technology product to be delivered under the proposed project is an energy-dense 20 Ah pouch cell which will allow cell validation and qualification to commence for multiple automakers. Over 2700 pieces of 20 Ah pouch cells will be produced as deliverables using an automated production line for use in cell validation and battery module fabrication. The all-solid Li cell will demonstrate ≥ 350 Wh/kg specific energy, ≥ 1000 cycle life, and ≤ $80/kWh cost (projected). Abuse tolerance of EUCAR hazard level ≤ 3 will also be demonstrated for the cells. Achieving these objectives is crucial for the commercial success of the solid-state cells because it bridges the gap from preliminary demonstration to automotive qualification which represents the greatest risk to mass market commercialization. This project will also allow Solid Power and its partners to continue to maintain a leadership position in solid-state technology and production.

Solid Power is actively seeking Commercialization and/or Financial partners to provide LOIs. Commercial partners could include:

- Device & vehicle OEMs looking to incorporate ASSBs into their products

- Cell suppliers looking to cooperate towards automotive-grade ASSBs

- Battery material suppliers looking to support scaling of sulfide solid electrolyte and ASSBs

Solid Power is seeking investors in the company’s upcoming Series B, both traditional VCs and corporate/strategic partners.
